Leddy Group resource specialists not only scour the candidate database looking for the right person for each position, they also tap into their personal networks to see if anyone might be ready to make a career move. Mark Thompson of Leddy Group’s Dover office did just that when he was trying to fill a Lab Technician position for a client, a manufacturer of heating systems located in Rochester, NH. He reached out to his older brother, Matt, to see if Matt had any connections who would be interested in the opening. Although Matt owned his own screen-printing business at the time, he had been in and out of the HVAC business for 15+ years. At the time, Matt couldn’t think of anyone, but two months later, he had the perfect candidate: himself.
Matt’s tenure as a service technician in the heating and air conditioning industry began when he was 19 years old. He was often recruited from one HVAC company to another—a testament to his skills and abilities—but the work itself was unforgiving. Being on call to respond at a moment’s notice when a customer’s boiler broke down on a Saturday night or when someone’s air conditioner stopped working in the middle of a heat wave meant that Matt’s work/life balance was tilting in the wrong direction. Lugging boilers out of basements and working in sweltering attics in the middle of the summer was also taking its toll on him physically.
Luckily, he had a back-up plan. Matt used his graphic design education to teach himself how to screen-print. Initially, it was just a hobby, which soon became a side job for small screen-printing orders for friends and family. As the orders increased and customer base grew, however, Matt decided to take the plunge and screen-print full time.
He certainly had enough business to keep him busy. The problem was, as a one-man shop, Matt was doing the job of three: screen-printing, accounting, and marketing. As tiring as it was, Matt plugged along on this path for a year or so until that day Mark approached him about the position with the Leddy Group client. The more he thought about it, benefits and a regular 40-hour work week started to sound pretty good. He approached Mark to see if the position was still open, and as luck would have it, it was. He met with Laura Brunson at Leddy Group for a pre-interview, and from there he was scheduled to meet with the company. An hour after that meeting, Leddy Group called to offer him the position on a supplemental basis. He started on April 4, 2016 with the understanding that the company would decide after three months whether or not to hire him on as an employee. It only took them two months to offer him a direct-hire position, and he accepted.
Matt’s new work schedule is ideal; he walks out the door at 3:30 pm every day, which gives him time to finish up his remaining screen-printing work or just enjoy a free late afternoon. After a few weeks on the job, he had a paid holiday off and thought, “Wow! It’s been a long time since I had been paid for a holiday or vacation time.” The Lab Technician position allows him to put more of his mind and less of his body to work, an aspect he really enjoys.
As far as his experience with Leddy Group, Matt says, “I had never used a staffing agency before. Everybody kind of knows everybody in the heating business, so a lot of the jobs that I had in the past were word-of-mouth. Going for an interview with a company I didn’t know was nerve-racking for me. Leddy made it very easy, though. I feel like they prepared me for the interview, and it was nice that they even told me what I should be wearing.”
We’re happy that Matt is in a satisfying position, and wish him continued success. Are you ready to be our next success story? If so, contact Leddy Group today.
