Manager of Engineering

A well-established manufacturer of tension control products is looking for a Manager of Engineering in Gorham, ME! In this role you will be responsible for new product development, project design and development, and sales/technical support, while serving as an integral member of the company’s leadership team. Responsibilities of the Manager of Engineering

  • Work with the CEO and other members of leadership team to develop, implement, and sustain the company’s long-term and short-term strategic plans
  • Manage, direct, coach, and mentor all employees in the engineering organization
  • Develop the team for expanded capabilities both in skills and management capability
  • Analyze technology trends and make recommendations on critical R&D investments
  • Collaborate closely with all peers – Sales, Operations, Marketing, Customer Service, and Finance – across North America, Europe, and Asia
  • Work closely with global sales teams to understand the engineering requirements
  • Identify solutions to market opportunities and work with leadership to prioritize accordingly
  • Direct all department activities related to the design of new products (standard and custom), modification of existing designs, and improvement in both production and test capabilities
  • Optimize designs and clearly state design objectives in the areas of product functionality, cost, and quality
  • Manage all projects for on-time milestone and full completion
  • Think innovatively to optimize products, projects, and team development
  • Ensure consistent application of formal project management tools across the department
  • Develop an annual engineering budget and provide periodic forecast updates as necessary
  • Develop a resource plan that fully supports both the long-term strategic plan as well as the annual budget
  • Be aware of and in compliance with all company policies, safety policies, and regulations, including all ISO9000 related policies on engineering development
  • Maintain a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve engineering design capabilities
  • Participate in grant requests at both the national and state level

Qualifications of the Manager of Engineering

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Proven hands-on experience with electromechanical equipment
  • Prior leadership experience with proven success in understanding and maximizing staff skills
  • Strong communications skills including writing, listening, and questioning, for interactions with internal customers and management
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to establish rapport quickly
  • Capability to absorb and articulate technical information
  • Highly motivated and goal-oriented
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, especially in a multi-tasking environment
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word and Outlook)
  • Ability to utilize ERP system for all required responsibilities
  • Ability to think strategically for long-term success
